First, unlearn this
The "35% tariff on Canada" is gone. Those tariffs were struck down in Feb 2026 and collection stopped Feb 24, 2026. If a post, video, or calculator still uses 35% (or 25%), it is out of date. There is no single Canada rate anymore - duty is decided per product.
What changed
- The US$800 duty-free (de minimis) threshold ended Aug 29, 2025 for all countries. Every parcel to the US is now dutiable, however small.
- Etsy (since Jul 9, 2026): US orders shipped without duties prepaid lose Purchase Protection. If your buyer is charged by the carrier, Etsy refunds them and deducts it from you. DDP is effectively required on Etsy.
- Etsy will not sell you a Canada Post label to the US (suspended Aug 25, 2025, still in place). Etsy now sells Chit Chats labels in the checkout flow.
- Canada Post still ships to the US, but DDP only, through a Zonos Verified Account with a Declaration ID.
For every product, before you list it
- Find its 10-digit HTS (tariff) code - start at hts.usitc.gov. The code, not your description, drives the duty.
- Write down its country of origin - where it was MADE, not where you ship from. Resale and vintage: origin is where it was manufactured.
- CUSMA check: does it qualify as originating, and do you have a certification of origin? Assembled in Canada is not enough by itself.
- Check the Section 338 list (in force Aug 22, 2026): 50% on listed goods, and CUSMA does NOT protect you here. The list includes candles, cosmetics and skincare, perfumes, jewellery, knitted clothing, handbags and leather goods, wooden kitchenware, paper goods, honey, festive items, toys and games, original artwork and antiques.
- Check the Section 301 layer: +10% on Canadian goods since Jul 24, 2026 - but CUSMA-qualifying goods are exempt.
The duty decision in 4 questions
- Is the product on the Section 338 list? If yes, plan for 50% duty, CUSMA or not.
- If no: does it qualify for CUSMA, with certification? If yes, duty can be 0%.
- If it does not qualify (or you have no certification): normal duty for its HTS code, plus the 10% Section 301 layer.
- Same parcel, three answers: 0%, normal + 10%, or 50%. Never guess a flat rate.
Pick your label path
- Etsy sellers: Chit Chats labels inside Etsy, or another DDP carrier (FedEx, UPS). Canada Post labels are not sold on Etsy to the US.
- Canada Post direct: DDP only via Zonos - expect a per-shipment processing fee (C$1.99 inside Shopify Shipping labels).
- Chit Chats: DDP only. You need origin labelled on the product and a 10-digit HTS code per item. Published fees: C$1.86 customs processing + C$0.21 per item, plus postage and calculated duties.
- Stallion Express: DDP available, calculator pricing - re-check their examples live, some pages are stale.
- UPS / FedEx direct: works, but brokerage and disbursement fees can dwarf the postage. Get the full landed cost before you quote a shipping price.
- Pirate Ship does NOT ship from Canada. It only works if you physically drop off inside the US.
Price the order, not just the postage
Landed cost to you = product value duty is charged on (the goods, not the shipping) x the duty layers that apply, + carrier processing and brokerage fees, + postage, + platform fees.
Decide per shop, in writing: absorb duties in your price, collect at checkout (Shopify), or a split. Then set your Etsy/Shopify settings to match - never both.
Paste this into your listings
"US buyers: duties are prepaid on this item, so there is no charge on delivery. Shipping is DDP from Canada."
Use only if true for that item and carrier.
Never do this
- Never undervalue a parcel or mark a sale as a gift - carriers held shipments over undervaluation in Sep 2026, and penalties run from 2x lost duties up to the full value for fraud.
- Never relabel origin. A China-made item sold from Canada is a China-origin good.
- Never trust a rate without a date. These rules changed at least six times in 14 months.
